Living in the Coachella Valley, CA we are surrounded by wonderful examples of Mid-Century Modern artifacts and architecture. I just can’t resist creating art for all of the residents and tourists who love this style.
I have been experimenting with painting black on black, and shiny vs. dull. I also have been playing with machine embroidery. This is two canvases bolted together to create a gap that is spanned with embroidered cheesecloth. All of the shapes were made separately and then arranged and glued on to the substrates.
Who doesn’t love Marilyn hanging in a Mid-Century Modern home? In order to not copy a professional photographers work I made a composite of features (my daughter-in-law sipping through a straw), one of Marilyn’s trendy hair styles and then I designed her halter dress.
How about a wonky 1950’s libation?
Curb Appeal
Inspiration: I enjoy doing architectural collages using old book pages and maps. The buildings that have been my subjects are filled with architectural details. My goal here was to create a collage for a building that has clean lines and minimal details.
